Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah (Arabic: جابر مبارك الحمد الصباح, born 5 January[citation needed] 1942 in Kuwait City) has been Prime Minister of Kuwait since 4 December 2011. He had served as First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence.
As Minister of Defence, Sheikh Jaber is the administrator of Kuwait’s armed forces. The Ministry of Defence has approximately 1,500 employees, excluding the military force. The Minister of Defence has championed the acceptance of qualified women in various specialties, such as the engineering and military facilities, morale guidance and public relations departments.[citation needed] Sheikh Jaber began his professional career as Supervisor at the Administrative Affairs Department in the Amiri Diwan from 1968–1971. Afterward, he served as Director of the Administrative Affairs Department in the Amiri Diwan until 1975. Sheikh Jaber then went on to become Assistant Under Secretary of Administrative and Financial Affairs at the Amiri Diwan until 1979.
In that year, he became a Governor in Kuwait, serving from 1979–1985 at Hawally Governate and from 1985–1986 at Ahmedy Governate. Sheikh Jaber was next the Minister of Social and Labor Affairs from 1986–1988 and Minister of Information from 1988–1990.
After the liberation of Kuwait, Sheikh Jaber became Advisor to the Office of His Highness the Amir, a position he held until 2001. It was on 14 February of that year that he was chosen as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence.
In 2006, he was appointed First Deputy Prime Minister, as well as Minister of Interior and Minister of Defence. The following year, he was named First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence.
In 2004, Sheikh Jaber became Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Environment. Most recently, in 2010, Sheikh Jaber became Chairman of the Supreme Council for the Disabled.
In 2007, King Hamad bin Issa Al Khalifa awarded Sheikh Jaber the "Medal of King Issa First Class," following his visit to Bahrain where he took part in the Middle East Forum on Internal and World Security.
In 2009, he became the first Arab to be awarded Japan's highest honor conferred on foreigners.[2] The Imperial Decoration of "Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun" was bestowed by Japan's Emperor Akihito at a ceremony at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. The distinction was awarded in recognition of Sheikh Jaber's contributions to promoting mutual understanding as well as political, diplomatic, and environmental ties between Kuwait and Japan.
The Prime Minister is a patron of the Sheikh Mubarak Al–Hamad Al Sabah Journalism award, created in 2008 to honor excellence in Kuwaiti journalism.[3] He is an avid falconer and actively engaged in many philanthropic initiatives worldwide.
Sheikh Jaber is married with children.
